Brief Information Peter Stuyvesant was the last Dutch governor of New Netherland. He is known for his autocratic rule and his efforts to defend the colony against English encroachment. Despite his initial resistance, he was forced to surrender New Netherland to the English in 1664, after which the colony was renamed New York.
